MySpace To Launch Developer Platform

MySpace has announced it will launch its developer platform program on Tuesday February 5.
Developers will be able to pre-register on the site to receive information about the MySpace Developer Platform originally announced in October. As part of the launch MySpace business development executive Amit Kapur has been promoted to chief operating officer and will oversee the developer platform.
"This gives developers deeper access to our community through APIs so they'll be able to build richer applications and also gives them an opportunity to build their business directly on MySpace."
"It's a natural step in the evolution of how we've worked with third party developers," Kapur told IDG News.
MySpace said its developer program will support Google's OpenSocial and the platform would be available in about 28 territories. The social networking site said it would be focused on allowing developers to monetize and promote their applications.
MySpace has worked on putting safeguards in place to avoid security and privacy issues from third-party applications, Kapur said. "A key interest we have as we launch this platform is to protect the user experience against things like application spam and security holes, so that'll be a major part of our launch. We're extremely committed to safety and security," he said.
Michael Arrington at TechCrunch writes, "Suddenly Facebook , with nearly 5,500 third party applications, has significant competition around their platform - Within a month both MySpace and Google will probably have launched their own services."
"Platform competition is great for developers, but it also means they need to create and maintain separate code for each platform they choose to play on. Someone is hopefully working on a startup that will streamline that process for people. Whoever does it first, and best, can have a winner on their hands."
