Last year, Google announced that it will take the page loading speed of a site into account, when determining the site's search engine ranking. In short, sites with slow loading times, will rank lower than similar sites, which load faster.

The Google Page Speed online service will allow you to not only see how your site performs, by scoring it out of a potential 100 points, it will also give you recommendations on what's slowing your site down and how to fix it. Long loading times can ruin the user experience of a site. As a result, sites that load slowly often get less traffic and fewer page views. It was this user experience problem, which apparently led Google to included page load times into their algorithm.
