Getting your homepage indexed in Google is only the 1st step to your SEO success. It's important that all your key web pages are indexed and appearing for relevant searches.
For new websites (or poorly promoted websites), they often suffer from poor indexing which means you're getting limited value from your Google exposure.Below are 5 tips to help improve your indexing in Google (and other major search engines).
- 1. Create and submit an XML sitemap for your website
A sitemap is a way of organizing a website, identifying the URLs and the data under each section….Google's XML format was designed for the search engines, allowing them to find the data faster and more efficiently
You can create an xml sitemap from scratch if you're familiar with constructing XML (here's google's guide: )
Alternatively you can use an online tool that will do the hard work for you. (XML Sitemaps have a great online tool).
Once its created you need to submit it to the search engines which will help them index your website more thoroughly. It's important to regularly update the sitemap as you create new content on your website so that all your pages are included.
- 2. Google Webmaster Tools
Google's webmaster tools are a great way to manage your web page indexing. Not only does it offer a way to submit your XML sitemap, but also provides important information on the indexing status of your website.
You can change the rate in which Google indexes your website, see crawl errors that Google has encountered when trying to index your pages and see stats about the crawling that Google has done.
- 3. Interlink your internal pages
The linking and structure of your website heavily influences how Google indexes your website.
If Google's spiders enter your website via the homepage, they will then continue to index the rest of the site via your internal links. It's therefore vital that all your content is easily found through your internal link structure.
The easiest way to solve internal linking issues is to the create a HTML sitemap of your website which contains links to all the pages on your website.
- 4. Create and promote fresh content
New content attracts Google's spiders. As they say, content is king for SEO. So by creating new content or updating existing content, you'll encourage Google's crawlers to return to your website more regularly.
- 5. Links Back to Your Internal Pages
When people undertake link building for SEO, they often fall into the trap of focusing solely on their homepage.
As links are the key to indexing, when you build links as part of your SEO, try to link to your internal pages also as this will encourage a deeper indexing of your website by Google and Bing.
With deeper indexing of your website, you're more likely to appear for more searches and more importantly, pages more relevant to a search will appear in Google's results, which should improve traffic and conversion.
